What Are Solar Watches?
A solar-powered watch is a watch that uses light energy to work.
Under the dial of each solar watch there is a solar cell that converts light energy into electrical energy. The watch takes in light, the solar cell changes into energy that is then stored in a rechargeable battery and this powers the watch.
There are two types of movements where solar power features 'lithium-ion battery and quartz' powered mechanisms.
Popularity of Solar Watches emerged in the late nineties by Citizen brand and later followed by Timex, Seiko, Casio, and Garmin.
How Do Solar-Powered Watches Work?
Light ..natural or artificial is absorbed by a miniature solar cell and it is converted into electrical energy which will eventually power the watch.
Energy is stored in a rechargeable cell so if there is no light the mechanism continues to function.
Therefore Solar Watches contain batteries but the batteries are not disposable and can be recharged over and over again.
The fact that the batteries don’t require replacement after every two to three years means the ecological footprint of solar watches is much lower compared to quartz watches. That is also one of the reasons the watches are so appreciated.
Solar Watches will stay alive as long as the rechargeable battery stays functional, it depends on the technology but you can expect it to remain active if left in a dark cupboard for several months. However even rechargeable batteries have an end of life and we know they can last beyond 10 to 15 years and 20+ years in the Citizen Eco Drive brand.
Therefore, if your solar watch lasts you decades, you most probably would have to replace the rechargeable cell at one point. The good news is that the cell costs no more than $20-$30.
How To Charge Solar-Powered Watches?
The good thing about a solar watch is that it charges naturally from the light while on the wrist. Therefore, if you spend a lot of your time outdoors, you don’t have to worry much about charging.
If you are someone who rarely goes outside with your watch you may need to intentionally charge it just place it by the window with the watch face facing the sun for a few minutes or you can leave it by artificial light, such as a fluorescent light. There are indicators on all watch faces.
Therefore, the best way to keep your solar watch always charged is to wear it often, especially if you go outside. It's as simple as that.
